2-Factor Authentication is mandatory for e-way Bill and E-Invoice Systems

As of 15th July 2023, the National Informatics Centre has made it compulsory for taxpayers with an Annual Aggregate Turnover (AATO) exceeding 100 crores to implement Two-factor Authentication.

To enhance the security of the e-Way Bill/e-Invoice system, the National Informatics Centre is introducing two-factor authentication. In addition to the username and password, users must enter a Time Password (OTP) for login authentication. This measure aims to strengthen the system's security and protect against unauthorized access.

There are 3 methods available for obtaining the OTP in the e-Way Bill/e-Invoice system. You can log in to the system by entering any of the following OTP options:

  • SMS: The OTP will be sent to your registered mobile number as an SMS.

  • Sandes App: The government has introduced the Sandes app for messaging. You can install this on your registered mobile number to receive the OTP.

  • NIC-GST-Shield App: The e-Way Bill/e-Invoice System provides the mobile app called "NIC-GST-Shield" specifically for generating OTPs.

To download this app, simply visit the e-Way Bill/e-Invoice portal navigate to the 'Main Menu - 2 Factor Authentication' section. From there, click on the 'Install NIC-GST-Shield' link to initiate the download process.

Ensure that you install this app on your registered mobile number and synchronize the time displayed on the app with the time on the e-Waybill/e-Invoice system.

When you open the app, you will see the OTP displayed. You can proceed with the authentication process by entering this OTP. The OTP gets refreshed every 30 seconds.

This program generates the OTP independently, without requiring an internet connection or relying on a mobile network.

2-Factor Authentication Registration

After logging into the e-Waybill System, navigate to the Main Menu's 2 Factor Authentication section to complete the registration process. Once confirmed, the system will prompt for OTP in addition to the login and password. User accounts serve as the foundation for OTP authentication.

In the e-Way Bill/e-Invoice System, the registered phone number of each sub-user under the Goods and Service Tax Identification Number (GSTIN) will be utilized for individual authentication. Once you have completed the registration process for both the e-Way Bill and e-Invoice systems, 2 Factor authentication will be required.

AATO (Annual Aggregate Turnover) is the total sales revenue generated by a company within a specific accounting period, typically one year. It represents the overall amount earned from selling products and services, excluding taxes and discounts. It provides an understanding of the company's total sales performance during that period.

Starting from 15th July, the National Informatics Centre (NIC) has enforced compulsory two-factor authentication for GST taxpayers having an Annual Aggregate Turnover (AATO) of 100 crores or more. This step has been taken by the NIC to enhance the security system and ensure a higher level of protection for taxpayer accounts.
